The Origin of The Twelve Days of Christmas

Friday, November 28, 2008

An e-mail received which i find worth sharing.
Enjoy!!!

I ALWAYS WONDERED...

There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me.

What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?

Today I found out, thanks to the Internet.

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics.

It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

One true love refers to God

Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

Three French hens stood for Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues

The four calling birds were the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, first Five Books of the Old Testament, the "Pentateuch", which gives the history of man's fall from grace.

The six geese a-laying stood for the the six days of creation.

Seven swans a-swimming represented the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing were the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.

The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful apostles.

The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle's Creed.

So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol...so pass it on, if you wish.

Saturday, July 12, 2008

Most probably , come Tuesday, the 15th of July, I'll be going for a medical check-up at Sunway Medical Centre. As far as i can remember, this will be my first time ever stepping foot in a hospital for my personal health inspection. To me, Just the thought of hospital is creepy enough. I don't know why but i just don't like it. Never did and never will!! My godma is in for breast cancer. She'll be in for quite sometime. A little request to everyone who reads my blog, just pray for her, that she'll make it through this, that Lord Jesus will be by her side to give her all that she needs on her road to recovery and come home to how she used to be. I know He will.

2 Weeks ?

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Two weeks just passed by..College resumes tomorrow and boy do i dread to go. I mean if college was close by then it's okay but i have to travel everyday to Brickfields via public transport. Imagine waiting for hours for the bloody bus under the scorching sun to get to college for noon classes and then by train where you're surrounded by many as class ends at 5 p.m which is during rush hour where people will be pushing to get in the train until it's pack like tins of sardines to get to my dad's office and even then i still have to wait for him to get off work .

Oh, and to add to that my phone almost got stolen by some "sampah masyarakat" when i , sorry we, were boarding the train. Here's how it goes, i met up with a few peeps to catch a movie( Narnia 2-Prince Caspian ) during the semester break at KLCC and i brought my little cousin, Jerome along cause he wanted to watch the movie as well. Had lunch at the cafeteria. Majority ordered McDonalds' but i had cravings for Fish & Chips which i dropped on myself. Luckily the Fish and some Chips were saved or theres goes my RM10.95 down the drain. Back to the point, movie ended quite late about 5.30-ish, lined up for the LRT and headed to KL Central to catch the KTM. I dont know why but while waiting for the train , i said a short pray in my heart so that Jerome and I, esspecially Jerome would be safe throughout our journey home. The train came as usual, packed. When boarding, people were pushing. Yup, pushing. I wonder sometimes, aren't we all wanting to go home after a long day slaving ourselves at work or at college but why are they so inconsiderate? I mean , can't they que up like civilized beings instead of acting like a gang of hungry wolves that haven't eaten for days pushing and grawling at each other for their own selfish desire just to get in the train ? Anyways, while boarding in, i was holding on tightly to Jerome and this idiot was coming so close behind. I pushed him away and yet he came so close. We managed to get in and then i noticed one of my pockets was empty. I thought it was my wallet then i realised it was my phone. I panicked and called for the police. He then asked if i suspected anyone, i was a bit hesitant at first, i wouldn't want to blame the wrong person but somehow i know God helped in this matter and i pointed out that bastard who came so close behind. Some malay rempit..probably a school drop-out , who obviously cant find a proper job and resorted to this. He then acted innocent and said it wasn't him and walked out the train. Eventually he started running, i didn't want to go after him at first since it was already late and i had a little kid with me but somehow i just went after him. A police man caught him on time. We then got in the elavator to head to the office where i questioned the bastard millions of time if he took my phone or not but he kept denying and then i just said prove it and he took out my phone saying someone gave it to him. HELLO, EARTH TO IDIOT!!! IF SOMEONE SUPPOSEDLY GAVE SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU SHOULDN'T YOU HAND IT TO THE AUTHORITY SO THAT THEY MAY HAND IT BACK TO ITS RIGHTFUL OWNER INSTEAD OF JUST STANDING THERE AND PRETENDING NOTHING HAPPENED ? WHAT A DUMBASS!! The elavator door opened and the chicken fled off.

Screw that but thank & praise God for answering my prayer and keeping us safe, i dont know what could have happened if i didn't ask Him. Like the Bible says, Ask and You shall be Answered, Seek and You shall Find, Knock and the Door shall be Opened. Celina's birthday celebration was alright. No offence but the partay was a bit quiet for a child's party. The adults outnumbered the children and coincidentally almost everyone wore black for no particular reason. Couldn't really find a suitable way to wrap her gift her brother got for her so we decided to tear up some paper, place em' in a bag( a nice one of course) and hid the gift in between.

The following week, went to Cosmo's World at Berjaya Times Square with Uncle Abel, Joel, Jerome, Celina and Lina. Aunty couldn't make it. Had fun until i had my period. Joe was very brave. He went for almost all the rides without a sense of fear and he's only 6 years old. Will upload pictures when i get too. On Saturday, accompanied aunty Martina for hood and stove hunting for her "used-to-be-forever-not-ready-new-condo" and here i am on a Tuesday afternoon typing this out. By the way, got myself a new camera yesterday ..

Canon IXUS 85 IS

Kimora Lee Simmons has one exactly like this.. i didn't get this just because she has one. I actually wanted the 12MEGAPIXEL 960 IS but the lady in the store recommended this. Season 2 of KIMORA : LIFE IN THE BAB LANE is on.

college

Monday, May 05, 2008

It has been over a month now since result day...obtained 5As but flunked math ..expected more but with the way i was during the examination period I'm satisfied. I'm in college already, doing a-levels hopefully with my fingers crossed to do exceptionally well and get myself a decent scholarship to pursue Law. Yes, law.. it's not as boring as it sounds. seriously!!

Anyways, classes are alright!! It's lecturers now not teachers, assignments not homework, college not school and it's very different. College life is most definitely not how you and i would have imagined it back in school being wild and free. You can be wild and free actually, it's up to you that is if you plan to have a dim and miserable future ahead. Yes, classes are more flexible and there's more free time on our hands but honestly, you really have to work your butt off .By the way, I'm studying at Brickfields college and it is located just opposite KL Central.
Yes, BRICKFIELDS. If you don't know, the place is packed with Indians, so those Indian food fanatics out there, here's the place you definitely should go for authentic banana leaf rice topped with loads of dhal and curry with side dishes of chicken and mutton, a dollop of veggie and not forgetting the crunchy papadam. Another thing, from what I've heard, behind the Brickfields monorail station is very famous for its "prostitution service" and flashers, there's even a hotel that charges by the hour, so be careful .

For those of you who are not familiar with the area, i guarantee you will be having a tough time trying to locate the college.Me and my mom did. Happened around a week after results were out. In their website, the place/building looked alright but I'll leave that to you to find out. Then again, do not judge a book by it's cover. Though the college may not look as fancy or sound glamorous( BRICKFIELDS) as Taylor's, Sunway and so on but it is a reputable law school, that's even more significant rather than it's outer look ( plus it's so much cheaper to further studies there than at all these colleges in Subang, a real brutal rip-off ).

Taking up Law, Economics and Business Studies. Lecturers are very good and have been in the education business for quite sometime. Law is a bit tough as it's still a new subject to me but catching up. Traveling is crazy, i have to leave 2 hours before class starts. The weather now days isn't exactly helping, by the time I'm home I'm half dead.

Life's been really hectic.

Photobucket

Dead blog thanks to mua.. well, about time to bring back life to this completely dead bloggie. Okay, but where to begin?
Christmas?
Photobucket

Since the last post was about Christmas so i shall start this one with Christmas as well.. Alright, then Christmas 07 was like any other Christmas. Food preparation , attended mass , entertained guests and so on. Nothing fancy.

Photobucket

Derrick was so eager to go to Tesco, they just opened one in Taiping and so happened Bernadette was working there, so he wanted to go there because of her. Usually the aunties will do the grocery shopping but i tagged along this time.
Photobucket
My job is to get ice-kacang only. We were having a little barbecue on Christmas night, me, Mel and aunty Martina wanted to go all English with the cooking thanks to watching too much of Jamie Oliver's shows(i *HEART* him, the man can cook, what's not to like ?). Anyways , did all the shopping then headed home. I was supposed to help out the preparation for the barbecue but procrastinated a bit :P

Photobucket

so the aunties ended up doing all the work ..

Photobucket

sowwy, but i did help in preparing the potato salad and the "secret sauce".

Photobucket

Fabian brought along his playstation and was rotting upstairs the whole time with it,so all the chinenis would also sit there and watch him play.. Silly boy.

Photobucket

Then came Christmas eve, we all looked fabulous in our dresses. Yes , we including me, it's not that hard to picture me in a dress. Just use your imagination that is if you have one :P.

Photobucket

she likes my butt!!

Everyone else left earlier for church,
Mel followed me with my parents. Sat at the usual corner and so happened Uncle Georgie and fly was there as well. After mass , wished, kissed , hugged, bon voyaged to everyone and went straight home to open presents, yay! The best gift was Carisa's. It was a little candy, shaped of a *ahem ahem*. It was crazy.

On Christmas day, as usual, had guests coming and going. Uncle , aunty & Joel came later in the evening from B.M. All the ladies in the house kept busy for the last minute preps for the salads, garlic breads etc.

Photobucket

Me and Pet were so into making the salad dressings. You should have seen us in action, we were like Mr. Oliver's apprentices. Even squeezing lemon juice was done in style. Later that night,
The whole of Pokok Assam(my kampung) went kuku..

Photobucket

even poor sonny boy( the dog).

chef Gongle'

Music blasted to the max, drinks were flowing non-stop,the smell of barbecued meat filled the air. It was fun until a few of us started visiting the loo one by one, even i did. Went all night but it wasn't
caused by the bbq.

Photobucket

The day after, was supposed to go for a swim but thanks to our upset tummies, canceled.

Photobucket

Pity the little ones cause they wanted to go badly especially Derrick and Celina.

Photobucket

We went the year before, had a really good time. We hardly go out cause with all the prep work and entertaining by the day after Christmas ,everyone would be too tired to do anything, i meant the adults, we kids are never tired ..muahaha.. maybe next year.Left for K.L the following day.

Photobucket
Few days later came Joel's Birthday. So had a little celebration for him. Now all the little ones are in Standard one.Times Flies.

All I Want for Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey

Thursday, December 21, 2006

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There's just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true...
All I want for Christmas
Is you...

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you...
You baby

I won't ask for much this Christmas
I won't even wish for snow
I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
Hear those magic reindeer click'
Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas is you
You...

All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one
I really need
won't you please bring my baby to me...

Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to see baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want him for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas isYou..

.All I want for Christmas is you baby... (repeat)

The Story of the Candy Cane

Tuesday, December 12, 2006

Of all the beautiful traditions of Christmas , few are so ancient in the meaning and so rich in symbolism as the Candy Cane .

From the beginning of the tradition of the Christmas Tree , it was customary to decorate the tree with symbols of the newborn Christ . Candles represented the Light of the World , the star recalled that first Christmas night , and the shepherd's crook symbolized the humble shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem who were first to receive the news , "Unto you is born a Saviour . "

Christmas Tree decorations in Europe , from which our tradition comes , were customarily made of food - principally cookies and candy . This symbolically expresses thanks for "our daily bread" as well as providing a Christmas treat for the children . Thus , the shepherd's crook became a candy cane .

As time went on , many ornaments took on a more permanent nature , but the Candy Cane retains the original use and meaning of Christmas Tree ornaments .

Candy canes on the Christmas Tree symbolize the shepards in the field on that first Christmas night - shepherds who heard the angel chorus and come to worship at the crib of the newborn King . They are also a sign of our thanks to God for the food He has given us all during the year , and , not least of all , they are an inexpensive and delightful Christmas treat for the family .
